hi its me, so my birthday was p chill, i got some language-y stuff and also electronics. i was thrown a psuedo-party on a friends birthday, including campfire stories (never forget the red room :( ) and a gluten free cake. it was all p good, and literally nothing has really happened since. there was a lame robotics meeting recently and shit got real and deep for a sec and then it wasn't.

the weather is actually getting temperate so i can walk again, and b and n time is coming up. speaking of which, i finished interpreter of maladies, it was a good time and i got really close to crying. her book "in other words" is really good and relatable, im having a good time reading that one.

jes was here for like literally 2 days, its was okay. we drew a pokemon thing on the board for memers birthday, and it was really fun, but it was a really really short visit. she drove me to k bbq, and we chilled at hmart, but nothing else really happened.

mitsuwa happened though, and that was a good time. i got a new u+ journal, so ill probably use that for random notes and scribbles. its just nice having writing stuff everywhere.

im kinda just getting ready for school to start, i finished algebra a few days ago, it was generally terrible. ive been doing apush now for 3 days, which is equally terrible, i have like another 30-40ish questions to go. im still tryna keep this journal alive, so thats just what im doing.

okay so it's august 13th, 2016. life's p chill, my birthday is tmrw and i have a grand total of 2 people buying me things, both my moms. brandon was coming back and being released from the grasps of the bitch but then couldn't ride the amtrak home bc he's too young and stupid policies. so while i was originally planning to be productive and study some hindi today we had to drive 5 hours thru traffic only to end up barely halfway there to pick him up. its not that big a deal but its kinda a nuisance, seeing as i had plans to catch pokemon with sarah and co in disgusting heat @ holmdel park. also my room was finally finished! just gotta get the extra furniture and fix both the curtains and the heater. alsoalso, i found author jhumpa lahiri and began reading some of her books. they're really well written, and quite moving.

summers like 3/4 over, and im getting ready to head back into the school year. surprisingly, i really didn't see my freshman friends at all. i met up with them once to watch finding dory and it was a p good time but tbh otherwise i haven't seen any of them whatsoever. i mostly just chilled with the senior fam at beaches, and also once or twice in the vr room. its been p fun, and also it looks like my life is kinda back on track. the schedule was set up but interrupted by fixing my room, so ive been living in the vr room for a bit, but that should be over when i get back.

languages are fine, i duolingo french and occasionally vietnamese. mostly french though, i can say hi, how are you, and the cat is black, but not much else otherwise. i cant speak any vietnamese, i just know assorted grammar. as for hindi, im still slowly progressing through the first stages, just finishing up the alphabet and barely doing any excerises. in general, this is just the beginning, and im expecting real progess to occur when my other tasks are done with.

heyooo, so it's 9:34 AM rn. i was supposed to wake up at 5 as my beautiful schedule says to, but i was up till like 12 last night watching su with some dumb nerds. life's been p chill so far, nothing real important or difficult has actually happened. im still waiting for the next a1c to open, and the laptop is totally falling apart at this point. otherwise though, im doing p chill.

lmao so much for "keeping a journal", but tbh @mein2015 was very bad at keeping track of anything. he tried his best tho lol

anyway, im back. a better title for this journal would probably be "angst with occasional language" but maybe i'll stop myself from being angsty. maybe. in any case, i started studying hindi on july 29th, and today, august 7th (jeez it's been over a year since i started languages), is the first day im trying to do things like stretches and drinking tea and not living generally terrible. i actually ate breakfast yall, im tryna not die by 20 now.

um i'll try to update semi-weekly, mostly for the purpose of my own nostalgic funtimes a few years into the future (thank god i didn't update last year, that's be so cringey lmaoooooo)

Greetings

Hello. My name is Ben Ling, I'm an aspiring linguist, who is currently studying Thai and Mandarin Chinese. I intend to move onto Vietnamese, Korean, and Japanese, in that order, and then to either go into Middle Eastern langues (Persian, Arabic, Hindi, etc.) or into European languages, (Spanish, French, German, etc.) My other hobbies also include cooking and sewing.

Currently, I'm using Benjawan Poomsan Becker's books on Thai to learn the language and culture of Thailand, and using YoyoChinese's online Chinese course to learn Mandarin Chinese. I'm still relatively new to both of these languages, so at this point I'm somewhat conversational in both of them, but barely. I know the Thai and Korean script, and some 300 to 400 Chinese characters.

I'm excited to begin this journal, and I hope to look back in the future on the linguistic journey I'm embarking on.
